Technical studies prepared for the banking commission (Vol.1)
Reserve Bank of India
Technical studies prepared for the banking commission (Vol.1) - Bombay Reserve Bank of India 1972 - 581 p.
In formulating their views on various aspects of the working of the banking system and of related para banking institutions, the Banking Commission, which submitted its Report on January 31, 1972, had the benefit of (i) the reports of the Study Groups appointed by them, (ii) the findings of studies and surveys sponsored by them either under the direction of outside research institutions or individual research scholars, and (ii) the notes and back ground papers prepared by the research staff of the Special Cell in the Reserve Bank of India to assist the Commission. The reports of the various Study Groups are being published separately by the Government of India. In these two volumes is published a selection of the studies and reports on surveys sponsored by the Commission (Vol. I) and of the papers prepared mainly by the research staff of the Special Cell (Vol. II). Besides the studies and reports on surveys included in Volume I, the Commission received a number of useful studies from several individuals and institutions including the Vai kunth Mehta National Institute of Co-operative Management, Poona and the State Bank of India. Not all these were financed by the Commission, though some of them were undertaken by the institutions concerned at the instance of the Commission. It is expected that these studies will be published by the respective institutions.
The papers of the staff of the Special Cell were prepared on different dates during the tenure of the Commission which extended for a period of three years. Most of them have been written with a limited objective in view, viz., either to bring out some specific points or issues for consideration of the Commission or to throw light on certain aspects or trends in the banking system. These papers are published here generally in the form in which most of them were originally put up to the Commission for their consideration.
The papers included in Volume II have been classified into eight sections, viz., (I) Restructuring of the Banking System-(i) General, (II) Restructuring of the Banking System-(ii) Co-operative Sector, Geographical and Functional Coverage of the Banking System, (IV) Competition and Co-ordination in Banking, (V) Procedures and Personnel Development in Banking, (VI) Non-Banking Financial Intermediaries, (VII) Laws Affecting Banking, and (VIII) Certain Other Issues Relating to the Banking System.
