The relationship between Britain and America has been much debated recently in Britain, and some of the issues it raises & re involved in questions of immediate political concern, for in stance, the choice between party defence policies at the forth coming elections. This essay, by an Australian, examines both the debate and the alliance, setting the latter against the changes which have already occurred in the world balance of power of the post-war period, and those which are in prospect, and treat ing the strategic relation as the central element in the diplo matic one.
Dr Bell, now a Lecturer in Government at the University of Sydney, is a former member of the Australian diplomatic service who spent ten years in Britain, successively engaged in research work at Chatham House and in lecturing at the Univer sity of Manchester, and a year in America as a Rockefeller Fellow pursuing research on American foreign policy.
