520			_aIt is perhaps easiest to describe the purpose of this book by first describing what it is not. The authors have not attempted to present a general description and analysis of all aspects of the life of a community. This is not a study of a community "whole" because all effort at total description must necessarily remain illusory if only for the reason that the multiplicity and complexity of observable facts belie comprehensive descrip tion. Moreover, by the act of attention implied by the selection of a problem, whole ranges of data lose their salience and importance. In this study a number of conspicuous areas of community life such as marriage, courtship and child-rearing are either not mentioned or are presented only as a necessary background to the discussion of other issues which the authors regard as more central to the focus of the study.
