In 1996 Bain published a comparative study of plant sizes, plant concentration, and leading company concentration covering eight nations. One prominent finding was that the average size (measured in employment terms) of the largest plants outside the United States was considerably smaller than the size of plants in comparable U.S. industries. Letting average employment in the largest 20 U.S. plants of any given industry by indexed at 100, Bain derived the following median relative plant size indices for his eight nation sample. | ||
