520 _aShortly before his death, Professor Alfred Cobban. who was equally distinguished as a historian and as a critic of political philosophy, set about revising and expanding his book on National Self-Determination originally published in 1945. Long out of print and unobtainable, its exposition and argument have gained in strength and relevance from the events of twenty years in which the focus of nationalism has shifted from Europe to Asia and Africa. In taking account of these developments, the author has hardly found it necessary to modify his judgments but he has taken the opportunity of widening their context by incorporating a paper on the Nation State first published in History, the journal which as editor he was later to transform. The present text is as it left his hand, revised and corrected for press. It will be indispensable to any serious consideration of the topic by the historian, the political theorist and the student of current affairs.
