Many environmental problems have an economic problem at their core and all environmental programmes have an economic component. They involve allocating scarce resources to computing ends. The importance of economics for understanding envi ronmental problems and for solving them is the first theme that we have taken up in these two sections. The book has been divided into two sections. Section I consisting of 16 papers is more about theories, valuation and sustainable develop ment. Section II relates to environ ment and resource use: merely focus ing on human resources, land re sources, natural resources, water re sources and pollution costs.
