520 _aThe present work is an endeavour to unravel the ancient ethnographic history of U.P. Himalaya including the adjoining part of Himachal Pradesh. More than a dozen ancient communities who played an important role in the formation of history and culture of this part of Himalaya have been studied thoroughly in this work. The work presents a comprehensive study of the ancient communities touching their history in all dimensions including socio-economic, politico-cultural and reli gious traits and aspects of the ancient people of the area. One of the objectives of the work has been to trace out the roots of the present Himalayan culture and find out the cultural components of ancient inhabitants in the present society.
