520 _aThe revolutionary career of Sardar Bhagat Singh serves as a lasting beacon to the citizens of India. A young man of extraordinary vision .and energy, he stirred the soul of slave India and challenged the might of the world's greatest imperialist power. He was a true and noble patriot. The striking sacrifice which he made for the liberation of his motherland had a galvanizing effect on the minds of the contemporary youth. Free India owes him a deep debt of gratitude, and can never forget the saga of his heroic deeds. Rising above the despair which gripped his generation, he carved out the path of national honour and glory. It is a great pity, therefore, that a life of such outstanding courage and valour should be so little known to his countrymen, above all to the Punjabis themselves. That nearly four decades after his dramatic sacrifice there is still no authentic, definitive or standard biography only reveals the lack of historical sense in us. For a fuller understanding of our heroes, and their thoughtful acts, we need a historical perspective. And it is with this end in view that the Punjabi University -decided sometime back to prepare and publish a series of biographical sketches dealing with the lives of the eminent heroes and worthies of the Punjab.
