The Gibbs Memorial Lecture on "Mathematics in Economics" was read be fore the 1953 Annual Meeting of the American Mathematical Society at a time when high school calculus was viewed by most economists as advanced mathematics and matrix algebra was still relegated to the pages of the journal called Econometrica.
