520 _aThe subject of "environment" at local, national, regional and global levels has, in recent times, become one of prime interest and concern to countries of the North as well as those of the South. Much discussion and debate has been generated by the "Earth Summit" held in 'Rio' in 1992. Anxiety continues to grow about the kind of world which we will be leaving for future generations, for consumption patterns of developed countries, the poverty in others, and unchecked deforestation. Although Rio may have blown the whistle, there is little evidence of changes in many of the practices all the world over, which cause long lasting damage to the environment. RGICS arranged a meeting to discuss these issues in which active environmentalists, academicians, policy makers, industrialists, social workers and representatives of NGOs participated. The discussion was led by Mr. Maurice Strong, eminent international civil servant with experience in both development and environment.
