520			_aThe long-run trends in Indian agricultural production and productivity have a bearing on many important issues in the study of the history and economics of the Indian subcontinent, as also on larger controversies in development economics. Not surprisingly, therefore, the last four decades have seen substantial scholarly work in this area. Much of it is, however, in books and journals no longer easily available to the modern student. This volume reprints a number of the most valuable contributions to the debate from 1953 to the present. A new and comprehensive introduction critically discusses the controversy as a whole, and also attempts a reconstruction of trends from the early nineteenth century onward. Two essays on hitherto neglected areas-Uttar Pradesh and South Bihar- have been specially rewritten from unpublished theses, and appear for the first time in this collection. A set of tables presenting the gist of George Blyn's classic Agricultural Trends in India 1891-1947 is also provided herein.
