520			_aThe papers presented in this volume were prepared for the North American Conference on the Social Implications of Industrialization and Techno logical Change, which was one of the activities of the Department of Social Sciences of UNESCO. The North American Conference had been preceded by several other regional conferences on related topics. However, this last Conference, though nominally regional, was, in fact, international in both content and participants. The actual planning and organization of the Conference were the pri mary responsibility of Bert F. Hoselitz. Wilbert E. Moore was responsible for co-ordinating the regional surveys of research results on the subject, and he served as rapporteur général for the Conference. As its organizer and reporter, respectively, we have joined as editors of this partial collec tion of the proceedings of the Conference. the The Conference was sponsored jointly by UNESCO, the Canadian and United the I States National Commissions for UNESCO, and the University of Chicago. It was held at Chicago during September 15-22, 1960. Twenty-four technical papers, prepared for the Conference, were dis tributed in advance and discussed during the sessions of the Conference. In addition, a series twelve "Working Papers," surveying the research of the world, results on the topic of the Conference in the major regions were part of the documentation. These reports wer were assembled and dis tributed by the Research Office of the International Social Science Coun cil. The Working Papers, as well a few papers prepared for the Con ference that contained similar subject matter, are not reproduced in the following pages. Chapter 15 presents an extensive summary based in part on the materials relating to the several regions. The bibliographies of the regional papers are the principal source for the Classified Bibliography contained in this volume. A limited number of the Working Papers are available from the International Social Science Council; they will be of particular interest to regional specialists. These papers and their full titles. are listed in Chapter 15.
