520			_aThe achievements of Indian industry, particularly in the post-independence period, have indeed been striking. Today. India finds a place among the top ten industrialised countries of the world. Indian manufactured goods very well match international standards and effectively compete in the inter national market in the whole array of sophisticated products ranging from consumer durables to engineering equipment. In spite of spectacular growth achieved on the industrial front, we have failed to (i) remove poverty, (ii) tackle unemp loyment problem, (iii) bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and (iv) remove regional imbalances. The number of sick industrial units have increased in the large scale as well as in the small scale sector. Industrial relations have deteriorated result ing into loss of production and reduced profitability. Though the public sector has emerged as a major factor in the country's economic growth, its performance has been far from satisfac tory. The rapid growth of industry in India has brought in its train a large number of such problems. It has also given rise to several controversies regarding the policies to be followed in the industrial field. The contributors to this book have made an attempt to examine these problems and controversies. The book also includes several papers relating to various aspects of industrial management which would be of great practical use to industrialists in raising the efficiency and increasing profitability of their concerns.
