520			_aThe importance of cooperation among South Asian countries is increasingly being recognized both at the political and academic level. The formation of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is a concrete example of the growing need for the South Asian countries to cooperate with each other in nation-building activities. Yet the inherent contradictions be tween the member countries have often influenced the proceedings of the SAARC. The policies and the perceptions of the member countries have been important factors in the smooth functioning of the SAARC. While determining these policies and perceptions, the problems of the individual member countries, both internal and external-particularly vis-a-vis India-have been significant. It is from this point of view that a study of the policies and the perceptions of the SAARC countries with regard to each other and in matters of mutual concern has been under taken, the findings of which have been brought out in the form of this book, This volume having well researched papers written by eminent scholars will be a significant contribution in enriching the knowledge of readers about the problems and pro spects of regional cooperation in South Asia.
