520			_aThis study is aimed at building an empirical image of the social role of intellectuals on the basis of information received through personal interviews and biographical details furnished by respondents in sample cases and data derived from secondary sources. Perception of their own role in society by intellectuals provides "a variable" to link "action" and "situation". By fastening upon this variable of self-perception the present study has had to rely on the data supplied by the respondents. The perceptual apparatus of any actor is his perception of himself, his self-concept, along with the cognitive and affective aspects of conceiving his role.¹
