520 _aThe early part of the book consists of a number of essays written by the author on O.S. Ghurye and Radhakamal Mukerjee, the two pioneers in Indian sociology. They wrote on a wide range of topics such as Indian religions, social institutions, urban centres, tribes, castes and communities, monographs on particular villages or cities, etc. The present book mainly refers to their contributions to the study of Indian religions and values. As teachers, research guides and writers they strove ceaselessly to mould the Indian academic life for nearly four decades (from early nineteen tbirtees to late ninteen sixtees), in terms of essentially indigenous values and criteria. Tbe later part of this book consists of the author's papers on Lingayat Social Movement in Karnataka. Arising in the 12th century Karnataka the Lingayat Movement lent a dynamism to the reform of society; it spon- sored not only new ideas but also social institutions to bring about social change: It still forms an active component of the integral culture of Karnataka.
