At the beginning, the basic political ideals of liberal democracy and of the modern dictatorships are sketched and contrasted. Thereafter, the bulk of the book is taken up with an elementary description and comparison of the structure and working of government in the United States and Great Britain. Wherever reference to the government and politics of France seems likely to sharpen appreciation of American and British political institutions or to throw light on the fundamental problems of liberal democracy, the relevant features of French government and politics are introduced.
