520 _aThis report presents a synthesis of the findings of a research project concerning the employment effects of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in developing countries which was carried out under the ILO's Multinational Enterprises Programme. It is complemented by a similar report entitled Employment effects of multinational enterprises in industrialised countries The present report analyses foreign investment and the direct employment (volume, trends, distribution and structure) of MNEs in the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America using, among other things, data from an ILO Special Survey of main MNEs. It also discusses the indirect employment effects of MNEs in these countries. A chapter is devoted to employment provided by multinationals in Free Trade Zones. Finally, the report highlights government policies and technology choice by MNEs as important inter-related determinants for the enterprises' employment effects.
