520 _aRoger Omond was born in East London, South Africa, in 1944. His first political memory is of the 1948 election victory of the National Party, which implemented apartheid. Educated at Grey High School. Port Elizabeth, and Rhodes University, Grahams- town, where he graduated in history and politics in 1966, he joined the Daily Dispatch, with Donald Woods as editor, in 1967. He became successively political correspondent. head of the office in South Africa's first African 'homeland' of Transkei, features editor, leader writer and night editor. When he left the Dispatch in 1978 he was assistant editor. While in South Africa he wrote for the New Statesman, Observer and Gemini News Service. He joined the Guardian in 1978 and is now chief sub-editor in the foreign department. He is married and lives in London.
