520 _aWhen the editor, some eleven years ago, invited author to this series. The author offered a translation of the Theaetetus with a running commentary. I have since added the sophist. Meanwhile the book has been announced under the title, Plato's Theory of Knowledge, which may seem to promise more than I have performed. My object was to make accessible to students of philosophy who can not easily read the Greek text, two masterpieces of Plato's later period, concerned with questions that still hold a living interest.
