520			_aThe problem of Untouchability defies all attempts made so far in the legal, social and economic spheres. To take further steps it is necessary to enquire into the results achieved so far, This is a descriptive study on Un touchability in Rural Gujarat. It attempts to find out in how many villages, in which matters and in what manner Untouchability is pra ctised in rural Gujarat. The enquiry is based on field observations of 69 villages and attempts to present 24 items of behaviour, The study reveals that the practice of Untouchability is strong in re ligious and domestic spheres. It is weakening in the public sphere and is no more a serious problem. The book suggests that the signi ficant breakthrough in Untouch ability will come from economic and political development and from the spread of new activities,
