520 _aThe ordinary citizen's fear of the terrorist can be well imagined when the defence personnel have started falling prey to them. The emergence of the latest mutations of the 'suicide agents' in Beirut and the 'do or die squads' in Punjab does not portend weJl for the future. In this at once timely and timeless book, Lt. Col. V.K. Anand begins by describing how different people tend to view the same act of terrorism and its perpetrators not only in varied but diametrically opposite lights. Since the authorities that seem to be increasingly failing to grapple with the terrorists who are zeroing in not only at individuals but also at the governments, the perceived fountainheads of all ills, he emphasises that people themselves will have to muster greater courage and effort to deter the terrorist. But for the public to adopt a responsive approach, an understanding of the complex nature of terrorism, its diverse agents, numerous ways and certain ominous factors is necessary. Therefore, the features of sabotage and subversion, kidnapping and assassination, and bombings and skyjackings along with the various brands of the terrorist set-ups have been lucidly described. The author having witnessed much of terrorism exhorts the citizens, whether in home, in the work-place or in transit, to incorporate in their routine a positive attitude. Be it a metropolitan city or a remote rural hamlet, a judicious adoption of the documented security measures will not only reduce the loss of life and property but also boost the morale of the people, trengthen the image of the authorities and expose the terrorists. The book should be as much useful to the security and defence personnel as to the ordinary man, woman and child who may be one day expected to face the terrorist.
