520			_aThis paper therefore aims to examine some phenomena of caste in context and to outline in a deliberately simplified fashion certain contextually determined regularities in the varied vertical, or hierarchical aspect of caste. It undertakes to show how differences in the degree of elaboration of caste ranking in various regions of India and Pakistan may be affected by differences in certain other gross dimensions of community structure. "Community structure" is here taken to mean the totality of social structure. "Castes" are here understood to be ethnic groups within a larger society which tend to occupy corporate ranks in relation to each other and marry endogenously. An "ethnic group" the term is used for convenience below to include both "castes" and "tribes". "Caste Ranking" is here understood to be part of social structure.
