520 _aIn thirty five years of our development efforts, the rural sector, invariably gets singled out for inadequate progress. The problem gets compounded each day with the pace at which our population is increasing. It is quite clear that our efforts at rural development should be geared up. In this context the need for some studies and research into issues that would help to chalk out a better strategy becomes necessary. There is a need to learn from practice and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta as an institution of national importance has a key role to play in this endeavour. The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta took its first step in this sector by organising a seminar at Durgapur, the proceedings of which have since been published. The Seminar established a number of working groups. As a part of their recommendations a Directory of organisations working in this field in the Eastern Region and Bibliography on existing literature were brought out. In 1982, in the first volume of the Directory information on 226 organisations was included. Now in this volume information on further 316 is included and published for wider circulation. The objective of producing a Directory of this nature is to identify organisa tions, their locations and the spread of their activities. Organisations both voluntary and government sponsored are active in this field. These organisations are operating at different levels-village, block, district, state and all India level. As far as activities are concerned the canvas is very wide ranging from agriculture, animal husbandry, socio-economic development, appropriate technology, housing, skill formation, training, relief, nutrition, sanitation, health, education, crafts and employment.
