520 _aPrevention of damage to environment is preferable to the burdensome and expensive repair of damage already done. Thus it is very desirable that the preventive action should include proper planning of all development activities that have an impact on the environment with a view to minimising any adverse repercussions and ensuring optimum utilization of resources. Public and political awareness in this respect is also f utmost importance. Responsible individual behaviour and complete involvement are essential in furthering the cause of environment. In veiw of the above, the Environmental Planning and Coordination Organisation (EPCO), under the auspices of the Department of Housing and Environment, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh, organised a three day national level seminar on the topic 'Macro-level Environmental Planning; Policies and Strategies from February 8 th to 10th, 1984. The issues discussed during the seminar were (1) Human Settlement. (ii) Ecosystem Management, (iii) Resources Management and. (iv) Environmental Education. Based on the recommendation formulated by each group, 33 recommendations of the seminar were brought out in May, 1984 in Volume Proceedings and Recommendations. This is the second volume, containing 15 selected papers presented in the seminar and the key note address delivered by Prof R Misra.
