The last requires the adoption of philosophical or political assumptions and it has generally been avoided in this book, though it will be seen that I have adopted the principles of liberalism and toleration which are implicit in the. Constitution itself. All the other methods have been used in such a manner as to give the reader a general introduction to the Constitution so that he can, if he pleases, undertake. further reading in any of the three fields of study. Inevitably there are some ideas common to this book and to my book on The British Constitution (Cambridge University Press, 3rd ed., 1951), but generally the treatment is different.
