520 _aThis study was undertaken on the initiative and with financial support from ILO's Asian Regional Team for Employment Promotion (ARTEP), Bangkok. I am thankful to ARTEP for giving me the opportunity to examino somo aspects of the subject which has been one of my research interests for last somo years. I would particularly like to record my appreciation of the cooperation and academic collaboration extended to me by Dr. Rizwanul Islam, who was responsible for initiating the study at ARTEP and provided a number of insights of the study in the course of my discussion with him during April 1985 when I spent some time at Bangkok in connection with this work. At Giri Institute of Development Studies, Shri D K Bajpai and Fahimuddin helped by undertaking collection and analysis of large volume of data in a very short time. The study could have taken long time in coming in its present form but for the fast and intelligent handling by Shri MSK Rao, of the manuscript which had already been delayed in finalisation due to my other preoccupations, and was not necessarily in a very intelligible and orderly shape. I would like to record my appreciation of the industrious and timely assistance from these colleagues.
