520 _aThis work is the first of its kind to be published by the International Labour Office. It is concerned mainly with facts, and aims at giving an overall picture of recent developments concerning major labour problems in the contemporary world. It is intended for people everywhere who are concerned about these problems - trade unionists, managers, politicians, educators, the layman pondering the future of society. We hope that it will help to refresh or supplement their knowledge and will thus serve as food for thought. By and large, the facts reviewed in it are known to the specialists, but they are not always readily available to the general public. This work is a synthesis of the vast amount of information which the International Labour Office receives from the 150 member States of the Organisation and is permanently engaged in analysing. In preparing it, we have also availed ourselves of the work carried out by the Office itself and the lessons drawn from its operational activities in many countries.
