520			_aThe steep hike in oil prices in the recent period has naturally sparked interest on the possibilities of substitution of oil products with alternative forms of energy. An essential pre-requisite for any action oriented programme in this direction is a comprehensive knowledge of the extent and pattern of energy demand in the various consuming sectors. This study seeks to focus attention on the energy needs of one area of the country, viz., Greater Bombay. It examines in detail the likely requirements of energy by the various economic units of Greater Bombay by the end of the Fourth and Fifth Plans. The scope for substitution of oil products with other forms of energy. in the various consuming sectors and the problems that are likely to be faced in such substitution are also examined.
