520 _aThis study relates to the investment and profit behaviour of con glomerates (industrial houses) and multinationals in India. In particular, the study deals with the investment and profit behaviour of firms belonging to the Birla and the Tata conglomerates, and the Indian subsidiaries of foreign firms operating in the engineering and chemical industries. Among the larger business houses, Birlas and Tatas dominate. These two account for 41 per cent of the paid up capital and 40 per cent of the total assets of the larger houses. Hence, the main focus of the study has been on these two houses.
