The author examines in depth the dynamics of the relationship between fertility and several socio economic variables: the economic value of children; son preference; family structure; female status; ethnic plurality, and infant mortality at both the individual and societal levels. While various popularly-held myths are exploded in the process, attention is focussed on probable policies that might affect these determinants in a direction favourable to a decline in fertility, and on understanding the linkages between fertility, these determinants and the efficacy of policies adopted.
