520			_aCOLLECTIVE bargaining is one of the most interesting develop ments in Indian industry since Independence, and deserves the attention of all who are concerned with the preservation of industrial peace and the improvement of industrial productivity. I have been fortunate to have had personal experience of negotiating agreements and also many opportunities for discussing the problems of collective bargaining, both individually and in conferences, with personnel officers. Various books have been published on different aspects of collective bargaining in Britain and the USA, but the sources of information on Indian experience have hitherto been limited to articles and reports, and it seemed worth while to bring together in the form of a book, the material I had collected, in the hope that it might prove useful to those seeking further information on the subject. To provide a broader perspective, the book includes a brief history of collective bargaining in Britain and the USA, and a comparison of present practices in a large number of countries, including some which have only recently begun to develop modern industries. It is hoped that the comparison of methods in different national and economic and social situations may prove of interest not only in this but in other countries also.
