Summary: The increasing pressure of population on land both in rural and urban areas and increasing deterioration of land due to soil erosion, salinity, overdose of chemical fertilizers, lack of land-use planning etc. have drawn the attention of all concerned to the need of a more scientific use of the land resources. It has become imperative not only to halt any further deterioration of land but also to reclaim, properly develop and utilise already degraded land for sustainable development. To achieve this aim, a Seminar on Utilisation of Wastelands for Sustainable Development was held at M.L.K. College, Balrampur in December 1987. The seminar was sponsored by University Grants Commission. The volume includes the papers presented at the seminar which deal with various aspects of wastelands, viz., definition, identification, classification, survey and mapping of wastelands; their genesis, growth and distribution; and planning strategy for their reclamation, proper development and utilisation for sustainable development. The book is expected to be of immense use to the policy-makers, wasteland planning agencies manned by government and voluntary organisations, research scholars and academicians interested in wasteland development.
