Status report on Farmers sucide in Vidarbha

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Pune; The Author; 2011Description: 48 pSubject(s): DDC classification:
  • 338.1 CHA
Summary: This report is an outcome of the discussion on possible interventions to address the causes of farmers' suicide in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It is the first in the series of two reports aimed at an understanding of the underlying causes of farmers' distress. This report is based on a review of the studies, articles and press notes on the issue of farmers suicide. Following this review of current secondary data on the issue, a second report based on primary data analysing cash flow of 465 families has also been published. The two reports aims to help design appropriate intervention strategies which can bring sustained relief to the farmers. This report clearly brings out that the causes of the suicide have been discussed in detail in almost all the reports but the recommendations are quite general in nature, which is probably the reason why the problem still remains. We at Chaitanya feel satisfied that based on these two reports we have initiated concrete first step towards working with the farmers in association with the civil society organizations in Vidarbha.
