Within the disciplines of the social sciences there is a large and growing interest about China. Too often, however, the complaint is heard from within the disciplines that articles or books about China are esoteric or out of step with social science paradigms. Many China scholars, on the other hand, have voiced the feeling that their materials ought to be better known to their colleagues in the disciplines-a goal that can best be achieved through the application of social science techniques to the analysis of Chinese data. The convergence of the disciplines and the China field is as yet incomplete. This book, an exploration of the problem of deviance and social control in Chinese society, attempts to further this convergence.
It is clearly not possible for one volume to cover all aspects of this subject. Our effort has been to present a series of essays, closely related by a common theme, that can elucidate the general question of deviance and social control in such a way as to benefit both China scholars and discipline-oriented social scientists.
