The process of urbanisation is a part of the larger process of economic and social change which is affecting not only the existing urban centres but the countryside as well. In our country, econo mic development plans undertaken to attain a faster rate of growth, coupled with the natural growth of urban population, have resulted in unprecedented expansion of urban areas, specially the metropoli tan centres. The movement of population from rural to urban areas has brought in its wake problem of slums and squatters, pressures on public health services, transport and community facilities. This calls for dynamic and well-conceived national policies for regula ting urban development, specially with regard to urban land use housing, town and regional planning. Although the local bodies are trying to cope with the complicated problem with their limited resources, the task being stupendous, it requires concerted action in a big way.
