In recent years the phenomena of leadership and organisa- tion have inereasingly intrigued theorists, researchers and prac- titioners as indicated by ever-growing approaches in sociology and political science. Investigations in this field have gone far beyond the early trait theories propounded during the first few decades of this century. Progressively, the focus of empirical research has shifted from the identification of the traits of lea- ders to the study of behaviour and position of such persons within the group context. This study is an attempt at identi- fying community leaders using position and action as measures of leadership designed to delineate community leadership patterns relevant to the village of Darauli, in the district of siwan, the State of Bihar. The first chapter sets forth the aim of study and describes the various details of field work. The next two chapters provide background for the leadership study. The following two chap- ters deal with the characteristics of emerging leadership and value and role-responsibility as perceived by village leaders. The sixth chapter contains a short biography of some forty-two village leaders. and scope of the generalisations have been analysed.
