The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which came in to force on 16 November 1994, gives most of the rights to manage the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to the nations themselves. Thereafter, the rights to deter mine the quantum of living resources to be harvested, the right to explore and exploit the seabed resources, the right to allow foreign scientific re search teams to undertake studies, lie with the state alone. It is therefore important to understand the various parameters of the ocean in order to plan for long- and short-term sustainable use of the sea. This book synthesizes, through the various contributions, information on the living resources in India's Exclusive Economic Zone. It fulfils the dual objectives of an assessment of the living resources of India's EEZ, as well as pointing to the type of assessment studies required to be undertaken in future.
