The first edition of this work titled "Introduction to the History of Government of India" appeared in 1923. Subsequent editions of the work calminating in the fourth edition in 1934 were necessitated due to enactments of constitutional reforms by the British Parliament from time to time. It became necessary to revise, enlarge and update the work consequent upon the enactment of the Government of India Act, 1935 and the fifth and last edition was brought out in 1936. That it became necessary to bring out five editions of this work during a short span of thirteen years is an eloquent testimony to the usefulness of the book for archives, libraries and scholars of Constitutional Law. Another book more or less supplemental to "Introduction to the History of Government of India" by the same author entitled. "The Government of India Act, 1935,
with a critical introduction and commentries was published in 1939 with a second edition in 1944. The revised, updated and enlarged sixth edition aims to present the sequence of historical development chronologically and concisely from the grant of the first charter to the East India Company by the Crown in the year 1600 to the Government of India Act, 1935 with a critical appreciation and commentry thereon. Since our present constitution which came into force from 26th January, 1950 is a result of the gradual historical and constitutional evolution and development extending over more than three and a half centuries and has besides other sources of inspiration adopted large portions of the 1935 Act, a knowledge of the rationale, background and foundation of these developments is indispensible for a clear appreciation and comprehension of the principles and features of the Constitutional Law on which our Constitution is based.
