India is a country of great diversity. The normally used indicators of quality of life - life expectancy, infant mortality, and literacy - differ extremely between different states, similar to international disparities between low performing nations and very high achieving ones. This book of essays tries to draw lessons from the contrasting understandings within India, rather than other countries. It supplements the book India: Economic Development and Social Opportunity, compiled by the same authors, which delves on the lessons that could be learnt from international evaluations of actions, strategies, and achievements. The essays test the economic decisions of the development process completely. The first two overview essays discuss the concerns at the national level, mainly concentrating on policy deliberations and district-by-district demographic pointers. They are tailed by exhaustive case studies of three very dissimilar states: Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and West Bengal.
