The rapid increase in the pace of urbanization in India in recent years has brought to the forefront a number of problems in the field of 'Rural-Urban-Relations'. For the first time in their centuries-old history, a large number of villages have come in direct contact with the city and its pattern of life either by being included in the transport and communication network joining them to large. cities and towns or as a result of the introduction of a number of socio-economic and political changes leading to the gradual conver sion of a number of large and medium-sized villages into towns and cities. The study of 'Rural-Urban-Relations', in the context of rural problems and, more than that, from a rural standpoint is as impor tant as the studies pertaining to the processes and prospects of urba nization in India which approach the theme from an essentially 'urban' angle by concentrating on such issues as favourable' and 'adverse' conditions for urban growth and the typically urban prob lems that arise in the oversized cities and towns.
In the case of India, however, where the villages far outnumber the urban centres and where nearly 70% population is still depen dent upon agriculture for earning its livelihood, the problems of "Rural-Urban-Relations" have to be primarily viewed from the "rural" angle and useful information about the impact and pros pects of urbanization can be gained by studying the villages which for one reason or the other, are already undergoing the throes of urbanization. Close and detailed studies of such 'towns-in-the making' can yield guide-lines for charting and directing the course of urbanization along the desired path. For purposes of policy formulation also, it is essential to collect empirical data regarding the emerging problems of rural settlements which are being steadily transformed into urban centres.
