The future of humankind lies in sustainable development which calls for an integration of environmental and development concerns: One of the basic needs to achieve the goal of sustainable development is the Environmental Education (EE) which is aimed at empowering the people to take wise decisions and appro priate actions at all levels. This is recognized in Chapter 36 of the Agenda 21 which was adopted by the Earth Summit held in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro.
In recognition of this need, and as a follow-up to the UN Conference on Environment and Development, a Global Forum on Environmental Education for Sustainable Development was organized by the Indian Environment Society, with the support of UNESCO, in order to exchange information and experiences on environmental education and development activities, and to promote net-working and cooperation among environment and development educators in the formal and non-formal sectors. The Global Forum was attended by about 350 parti cipants from over 40 countries, both from the developed and developing world, including representatives of numerous NGOs.
This volume includes the invited papers and a few selected contributions, particularly from the round table sessions on EE for Sustainable Development, Environmental Ethics, and the International Dimensions. The papers provide an overview of the state of environmental education in different parts of the developed and developing world, and offer valuable ideas, particularly on environ
mental ethics The volume will of interest to teachers, planners, decision makers, NGOs and others concerned with environment and sustainable development.
