Economic reforms in India and the market economy : interface with the States, bureaucracy, business and society - New Delhi Allied Pub. 1994 - 285 p.

This book examines the genesis, history, progress and the problems faced by the Indian economy in pursuing the post-1991 economic reforms. It provides a provisional performance appraisal of the first three years of these reforms. It draws on the relevant lessons from the international experience with similar reforms. Besides the macro-economic appraisal of the reforms, this book also presents micro-economic perspectives of these reforms. The highlights of the micro economic perspectives include observations on the percolation of the economic reforms at the State level and on the responses of the bureaucracy to these reforms in seven selected States (namely, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Maha rashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal). The book also presents the strategic responses from some of the leaders of private sector organisations to the new economic environment characterised by increasing degree of national and international competition. The author presents his recommendation for shaping future economic reforms. He propounds a synthesised paradigm conceptualised as the paradigm of "Socially Responsible Market Economy" (or the "SRME paradigm") for public debate and adoption in the form best suited to the Indian politico-socio economic conditions.

The book has been written in as non-technical a manner as possible to facilitate communication of the message of economic reforms to the people. It is mainly addressed to the students; researchers; bureaucrats and policy-makers in the government at both the Centre and the State levels; politicians especially the elected representatives of the people; administrators; entrepreneurs and business managers; as also the general readers interested in India's current economic reforms. This book should also be of interest to the "India-watchers" abroad including multilateral institutions; foreign investors and related advisory agencies and the concerned scholars at various Universities, Research Centres and other similar fora.
