The book contains three papers on Tribal development by three seasoned administrators, a paper on the role of a voluntary organisation in social transfor mation by a social activist, a paper on Action Anthropology by the father of this sub-discipline and a paper on tribal situa tion in India on the eve of India's indepen dence by the founder Director of the Anth ropological survey. The papers focus the problems of tribal and backward communi ties; and the ongoing programmes of the development efforts by the government and voluntary agencies.

The papers are selected from the files of the Institute of Social Research and Applied Anthropology stationed at Bidisa where they were presented in National and International seminars at different times, over a period of about 10 years.
