The findings of the Working Group are published in two separate volumes. The present book, Volume I, consists of working papers prepared by the experts, with a foreword by Mr. Daniel Cosió Villegas (Mexico) and an introduction by Professor Egbert de Vries (Netherlands), Special Consultant of the Working Group, who, in co-operation with Mr. José Medina Echavarria (ECLA), edited these papers. The paper under Chapter III entitled 'Essay of a Socio-Economic Typology of the Latin American Countries', prepared by Rev. Roger Vekemans and Rev. J. L. Segundo, was sponsored by the of American States. Organization The papers under Chapters I, V, VII, VIII, XI and XV were prepared under the sponsorship of the United Nations and the Economic Commission for Latin America. The Latin American Centre for Research in the Social Sciences, in Rio de Janeiro, also sponsored papers presented under Chapters XIV and XVI. Volume II contains a study on social aspects of economic develop ment in Latin America, based on the proceedings of the Expert Working Group, written by the three joint rapporteurs, namely Professor Benjamin Higgins (Canada), Mr. José Medina Echavarría (ECLA) and Mr. H. M. Phillips (Unesco). Unesco wishes to express its gratitude to the scientists who have combined their efforts in preparing this publication. It is Unesco's hope that their experience will be of benefit to those who in subsequent years, in one way or another, will be responsible for the social and economic development of Latin America.
