Uneven economic development is a distinct characteristic Si the Indian economy since 1950. An important aspect of this phenomenon is the disparities in the growth of rural industries and the flow of institutional credit. These aspects of rural development were the subjects of discussion during the Third Annual Conference organised by the Society for the Study of Regional Disparities Some important contributions to that conference are brought out in this book.

Minocha presented his research findings on the changes in Occupational structure in Madhya Pradesh and examined the extent to which the rural industries have relieved population pressure on agriculture. Swamy unfolds the process of proletarianisation and pauperisation of rural peasantry and examines its regional dimension Over the decade of the 1960s. Dholakia uses the chain model to assess the significance of institutional credit in reducing the regional inequalities of income. Dadibhavi takes case up a study of Karnataka and examines the inter-district disparities in institutional credit. VG Rao and S Chandrasekhar concentrate on the problems of the weaker sections regarding the access to cheap institutional credit in Karnataka. Gupta and Bandopadhyay take up the regional marketing problems of fertilisers.
