For more than two decades, the Nobel conferences have drawn large numbers of people to Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. While the crowds have grown in size, the general thrust of the two-day conferences has remained con stant: to assemble a panel of experts to address a science-based theme. The audience has ranged from college and university professors to high school instructors and some of their students to interested citizens. At times the conference has focused on very specific issues; in contrast, the planners of Nobel Confer ence XXI intended that the conference explore a topic with vast implications the impact of science and technology on society in a way that could be understood by those most affected, the general public.
