The foreign policy of a country operating at the global, regional and bilateral levels has to grapple with political, economic and security issues in a concrete world situation. The framework of Indian foreign policy is based on non-alignment, peace, disarmament, economic development and decolonisation. The task of concretisation of this framework is performed by political leadership and the bureaucracy. The reality of India's foreign policy is revealed by the foreign economic relations and security arrangements evolved by it in the last four decades during which it has had to meet many challenges. This study examines the country's responses to these challenges with a view to understanding the dynamics of its foreign policy. Its major concern is to describe the foreign, political and economic relations of the country. An effort has been made to critically evaluate the performance of Indian foreign policy by focussing attention on its theory and practice.
