National wage policy

Over a period, the Indian wage structure has become increasingly irrational. This is due to the ad hoc approach adopted by the Government to wage . issues. The national wage structure, besides placing burden on the industry and the economy, has also sustained and strengthened anti-work culture. The Government should control price levels, curtail non-development expenditure and abnormal incomes and relate wages to performance so that the economy does not run into rough weather. Incorporating the recommendations of the Fourth Central Pay Commission, the work logically argues that while labourers' efforts should be duly rewarded, wage revisions beyond a level should conform to productivity levels and should take into account the interests of the industry, the entire economy and the consumers. This work pleads for sustaining and strengthening productivity culture for the benefit of not only the workers, but the entire economy. It is bound to attract the attention of all those who are interested in saving the country from 'high cost economy'.
