India owing to its rich socio-cultural heritage and beautiful natural endowments has vast potential for tourism. After Independence, considerable attention has been given to the development of tourism which has met with certain success yet the fact remains that the possible potential of tourism has not been attained.

In the present book, Dr. S. N. Singh has attempted to appraise the prospect of tourism of the holy city of Varanasi-a leading centre of country's way of life having imbibed many cultures, civilisations and religion inee very early times. The record of responses of toutists. on what symbolised the word 'Varanasi' to them is interesting and reflective. Lastly, the author concludes that there is much scope of development of tourism in the city and given his suggestions for viable planning and improvement.
